What’s the difference between medication assistance and administration?

Medication assistance — reminders, opening packaging, and certain assigned support steps — can be provided by Health Care Aides, who since February 2, 2026 are regulated health professionals under the College of Licensed Practical Nurses and Health Care Aides of Alberta (CLHA), working within a care plan, assigned tasks, demonstrated competence, and supervision. Medication administration involves assessment, clinical decision-making, and monitoring — such as selecting a dose or giving an injection — and is performed by a nurse (LPN or RN) within their scope. With insulin, for example, an appropriately assigned HCA may help with certain support steps, but never dials the dose or injects; that is nursing. We match every task to the right team member.
