CDHCI Frequently Asked Questions

Learn how Client-Directed Home Care Invoicing works, who is eligible, and how Alberta Maple Care can help.

What does CDHCI stand for?

CDHCI stands for Client-Directed Home Care Invoicing. It is a program under Alberta Health Services that allows eligible Albertans to choose and direct their own home care services from an approved provider like Alberta Maple Care.

How is CDHCI different from regular home care?

With regular AHS home care, the government assigns a provider for you. With CDHCI, you choose your own provider and have more control over who delivers your care, when services happen, and how your authorized hours are used. Alberta Maple Care bills Alberta Blue Cross directly, so there is no out-of-pocket cost for approved services.

Who is eligible for CDHCI in Alberta?

CDHCI is available to Albertans who have been assessed by Alberta Health Services Home and Community Care and approved for home care services. The assessment determines the type and number of hours you are authorized to receive. Your doctor can make a referral, or you can contact AHS directly to request an assessment.

What services are covered under CDHCI?

CDHCI typically covers personal care (bathing, dressing, grooming, mobility), essential health-linked homemaking, and in-home respite care. The specific services and hours depend on your individual AHS assessment. Alberta Maple Care can provide additional private top-up services beyond your funded hours if needed.

Does Alberta Maple Care bill Alberta Blue Cross directly for CDHCI?

Yes. Alberta Maple Care is a registered CDHCI provider and bills Alberta Blue Cross directly on your behalf. You do not need to pay upfront and wait for reimbursement. This removes the financial stress of managing invoices and claims.

Can I add extra hours beyond what CDHCI covers?

Absolutely. Many of our CDHCI clients add private top-up hours for additional services or extended care beyond their authorized AHS hours. You can add these extra hours at any time and customize them to fit your needs, whether that means more personal care visits, companionship, or specialized services.

How do I switch to Alberta Maple Care as my CDHCI provider?

If you are already receiving CDHCI services from another provider, you can switch to Alberta Maple Care. Contact us at 1-403-685-0053 and we will guide you through the transfer process. The transition is usually straightforward and we coordinate with AHS to ensure continuity of care.

How long does it take to get approved for CDHCI?

The timeline depends on the Alberta Health Services assessment process. After a referral, an AHS case manager will schedule an assessment to determine your eligibility and authorized hours. Once approved, you can choose Alberta Maple Care as your provider and we can begin services promptly. The entire process typically takes two to four weeks from referral.

Is CDHCI the same as Alberta Blue Cross coverage?

Not exactly. CDHCI is an Alberta Health Services program that uses Alberta Blue Cross as the payment processor. Alberta Blue Cross handles the claims and payments, but eligibility and authorized hours are determined by AHS. Alberta Maple Care manages the billing relationship with Alberta Blue Cross so you do not have to.

What happens if my care needs change after my CDHCI assessment?

If your care needs increase or change, you can request a reassessment from Alberta Health Services. Your case manager can adjust your authorized hours and service types accordingly. In the meantime, Alberta Maple Care can provide additional private-pay services to fill any gaps in coverage.
